Collaborating with AI

As an artist, I often come across calls for art and I try my best to participate in as many as I can as a way of exercising my creative muscles. When working on a new artwork for a call for art, I like to try out new tools and experiment with mediums I’m not as familiar with but have been wanting to try.

Essentially I’m giving myself a new artistic challenge paired with a specific time frame based around the deadline for the call for art. This time around, I wanted to experiment with AI again in the ideation stages of my workflow. For those unfamiliar with AI image generators; here’s a quick summary written by ChatGPT, another AI tool.

“Text-to-image AI generators are a cutting-edge technology that use machine learning to create images based on natural language input. They allow users to generate images of things that may not exist in the real world.

This technology is used for various purposes such as creating images for video games, films, social media, advertising and even scientific research. With advancements in technology, the generated images will become increasingly realistic and high quality.

Overall, text-to-image AI generators are a valuable tool for imagination and expression, providing a new way to create and manipulate images in various fields.”

So with that in mind, I went to my favorite text to image AI tool - Dalle2 by OpenAI.

I started out giving prompts like this one “pyramids, skyscrapers, ancient amphitheater, modern city park all in one beautiful landscape” and got this result:

I liked the way the prompt gave a very gritty almost life like image, but I wanted it to be more whimsical and pretty so I changed my prompt a bit and pushed forward!

“ancient pyramids, skyscrapers, ancient amphitheater, modern city park all in one beautiful futuristic sparkling landscape with pink skies photo realism”

That prompt then generated results like these images below. Note that these are just some of my favorite iterations created by the software, but in reality it created almost 16 different versions from my prompt.

Next I took my favorite iterations from AI and uploaded them my landing pad reference folder - the cloud component of Gravity sketch, an app for the Virtual Reality headset I own (the MetaQuest Pro, gifted to me by Meta).

From there I was able to bring in the reference images and use them as inspiration as I created this 3D landscape - the first one I’ve built from scratch in gravity sketch without any real instruction or research into how to technically “build” spaces in VR.

In the image below we have a look from one of the sides, showing the portal and the mirror on the other side; symbolizing a virtual parallel reality that’s simultaneously happening; one that some of us are reaching towards in our everyday virtual interactions. The repeating colors remind us that our bodies are made up of the same basic organic materials that our world is made of, a two way mirror of sorts.

In the image below we have a look from above, possibly my favorite view of the cityscape so far.

The artwork isn’t completely finished yet, and the deadline has been extended so I’ll be spending some time adding more details and trying out different color palettes within the cityscape. Stay tuned for the final result which may be featured in an upcoming exhibition.
