Stargaze Names had its first anniversary in December 2023. The community embraced Names as part of their digital identity, with 17,420 Names minted, owned by 9,470 addresses. So far:
6,253 Names are associated with an address
3,958 Names have an associated NFT for their profile
1,594 Names have associated a Twitter account
Half of all marketplace listings use a Name
Stargaze Names are used across the website in many ways. Your wallet address gets replaced with the Name you associated it with. Your Name will show as the buyer, seller, creator of a collection, on the leaderboard, and more. You can set a profile picture from one of your NFTs, and all this is done on-chain, so any protocol can fetch that information if they wish to.
Another perk of having a Name is getting the Names page, your personal web3 bookmark, linking to your socials and wallets. (As a reminder, this is completely optional, social media links get associated only if the owner of the Name wants it to.) If you are a creator, all collections will also show up there.
Creators can associate their Name with a collection. That allows artists to have all projects’ social media links on the Launchpad/Marketplace page, as well as a vanity URL like this:
Sending NFTs or assets is also possible by using Names. Easy to remember, makes the whole experiencing of gifting more seamless and fun.
Badges (NFT POAPs) can be claimed by using Names as well:
The fees to mint a Name are simple:
3 characters name - 10,000 STARS
4 characters name - 1,000 STARS
5+ characters name - 100 STARS
The minute you mint a Name, it is possible for someone to make a bid on it. That means every name is tradeable and can be sold to the bidder. If the bid is still valid by the time of one year, a renewal fee takes place.
The renewal is in place to avoid “squatting”, where someone mints a coveted Name only to sit on it without using. This is in alignment with the vision of making the Names more fairly distributed and in a market-based approach.
Renewal fees are only required when there is an active bid by the time of a 1 year end (depends on the date you minted the Name).
The renewal fee is 5% of the top bid, while the cap is 10k STARS per year.
The minimum renewal is set to mint fee price.
In other words, Names remain with their owners as long as no bids are made, and need to pay the renewal fee only if there is a valid bid on it.
On Stargaze website, you will be notified when the renewal is due, and will be able to check under Names tab which ones will expire soon.
There will be a month grace period after it expires to pay for it. After that, the Name will be sold to the highest bidder automatically. (If there are no bids, you can click “Free Renewal” or wait for one month to pass, in which case the renewal will also happen.)
You will also be able to fund the renewal upfront, in case there is a valid bid (30+ days) on your Name but the due date (1 year of mint time) hasn’t arrived yet.
One Name, many addresses Name owners will be able to associate several $STARS addresses with a single Name.
Expand Names to beyond key type 118 compatibility Right now, Names are compatible with derived bech32 / key type 118 addresses, meaning .stars can be .osmo, .cosmos, but cannot be directly converted to .terra or .scrt for example. Using Public key and algo on v2 will allow all keys to be supported in the future.
