This quote is attributed to the poet W.H. Auden, who wrote it in his poem "The More Loving One". It expresses a sentiment that many of us can relate to: the feeling of loving someone more than they love us back. How do we cope with this imbalance? How do we deal with the pain of unrequited or unequal love?

Some people might say that we should give up on such a hopeless situation and find someone who can love us as much as we love them. They might say that we deserve better than to settle for less than we deserve. They might say that we are wasting our time and energy on someone who doesn't appreciate us.

But I have a different perspective. I think that there is something noble and beautiful about being the more loving one. I think that it shows a strength of character and a generosity of spirit to love someone without expecting anything in return. I think that it is a sign of maturity and wisdom to accept the reality of the situation and not try to change it.

Of course, this doesn't mean that we should let ourselves be taken advantage of or mistreated by the person we love. We should still have boundaries and respect for ourselves. We should still communicate our needs and feelings and ask for what we want. We should still have hopes and dreams and goals for our own lives.

But we should also be able to love someone without conditions or demands. We should be able to love someone without jealousy or resentment. We should be able to love someone without fear or insecurity. We should be able to love someone without losing ourselves.

Because in the end, love is not a competition or a transaction. Love is not a game or a bargain. Love is not a measure or a score. Love is not a question or an answer.

Love is a gift and a grace. Love is a miracle and a mystery. Love is a choice and a chance.

And if equal affection cannot be, let the more loving be me.
