The Based Intern #1: First Day on the Job

Scene I

Today is Hall Hoffman Jr.’s first day as an intern at Base Labs, one of a number of teams working on blockchain scaling solutions in the pursuit of a more transparent and decentralized set of financial rails.

I know blockchain sounds like a lot of mumbo jumbo - and it mostly is - except when it’s not. We’ll get more into it later.

In a world that demands specialists, Hall is a bit of a master of none. The kind of kid who can sit at any lunch table, but not really fit in anywhere.

Age: 21

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 165 lbs.

Net Worth: More JPEGs than he’s proud to admit.

Skills: Doom-scrolling, Meme-making, Writing buggy code.

Hall stands outside the Base HQ, a radiant beacon of future-tech amidst a grimy old city. Holding Friedrich Hayek’s “The Road to Serfdom”, he gazes up at the logo. He utters to himself “First day on the job.”

Scene II

Base Labs is an offspring of the Fortune 500 titan Coin Industries, which is proudly stamped on the New York Stock Exchange (that’s the setting of your Dad’s favorite daytime TV show). Strange, considering Base Labs aims to flip the very financial table that made its parent company a giant.

The man at the helm of this revolution? Ryan Strongarm: Intense, no-nonsense, carries with him a presence that commands respect, and yes he is bald.

Age: 40

Height: 6’0”

Weight: 200 lbs.

Skills: Visualizing value, Forward thinking, Creating products people love

Scene III

Meet Jay Pollard, Base contributor #001. Jay is hard to miss. His flowing blonde hair and solid build turn heads upon entering a room. What’s more than his stature is his ability to speak and convey important messages to folks who are like-minded and those on the fence.

He's deeply immersed in the intricacies of the blockchain and Ethereum landscape. Passionate about the potential, he's not just an observer, but an active participant in the crypto discourse, building consensus one conversation at a time.

Age: 30

Height: 6'2"

Weight: 180 lbs.

Skills: Computer science, Public speaking, Empathy

Jay likes to take time to himself often just to think. He aims to be concise and speak in an approachable manner simplifying the topic, making it accessible to all. He's not just providing information; he's fostering understanding.

With conviction and a touch of poetic flair, Jay, thinks to himself, "This doesn’t just have to work, it has to be fun.”

Scene IV

The Base HQ cafeteria is bathed in the soft glow of sunlight, casting a serene ambiance. The clinks of cutlery and cups provide a rhythmic background to the fervent discussions of employees. Amidst their banter, you can hear murmurings about The Bureau of Banking Benevolence and its Chairman, Larry Lender…

Scene V

Hall made a round of introductions that seemed neverending. Learning from Base's top minds, Hall got a glimpse at the magic. He met with forward-thinking young economists, 10x developers who ran on Mountian Dew and LED screen light. Surrounded by lines of code and research in every nook and cranny, Hall wore a big grin that slowly grew through the day...these people gave a damn.

Scene VI

Nearing the end of Hall’s first day he had a 1-on-1 scheduled with Jay. Jay wanted to show Hall why they were building what they were building so he took him down the street to The Bureau of Banking Benevolence. The security at the bureau recognized Jay immediately and began muttering into their walkie-talkies.

Jay and Hall navigate the expansive halls of the Bureau of Banking Benevolence. The walls tell the story of money's evolution: from ancient coins and trade items to modern paper notes. Were they in a government building or a strange version of a church?

Hall speaks up, "With all this space, they haven't highlighted a single flaw in their system."

Jay, his tone touched with hope and conviction, turns to Hall and remarks, "Crypto wasn't created to make you rich It was created to set you free.”

Scene VII

In an open space, Ryan Strongarm stands confidently, addressing an attentive crowd. Behind him, casting a looming shadow over the assembly is the intimidating silhouette of a colossal bank, representing the might and rigidity of traditional finance.

With determination in his eyes, Ryan declares, "Block by block we are building a more transparent, fair, trustless, and decentralized financial system."

Scene VIII

It’s well past midnight. Hall, at long last hopes to have found something he might master. In a room adorned with ample buzzing computer screens and illegible sketches, Hall sits amidst a whirlwind of ideas. The soft glow from a reading lamp illuminates the pages of Hayek. As he reads, a discernible trail of inspiration clicks with what Hall had experienced on his first day on the job.

Lost in thought, Hall softly murmurs, "From Hayek to here...”

Scene IX

A dimly lit, opulent boardroom stretches out, shrouded in an air of foreboding. Heavy drapes keep the modern world at bay. The only light filters from a single, archaic chandelier overhead, casting long, dark shadows that obscure the faces of traditional bankers. Their expensive suits gleam faintly, their expressions hidden but their intent clear.

A voice, cold and firm, cuts through the thick tension, "Base is disrupting the order. We must respond."
