How Faraway is building an interoperable web3 gaming system

Blockchain enables asset ownership and new economic models in web3 games, but complex user experiences –  like managing crypto wallets, gas fees, and clunky onchain transactions – can make it difficult to attract mainstream gamers, especially those who don’t have knowledge or interest in crypto.

That’s why Faraway set out to create a new, seamless user experience for its interoperable gaming system, powered by web3 and crypto under the hood. With a mix of crypto-native users and newcomers, Faraway needed to offer one-click access to a multichain crypto wallet, reducing the friction of onboarding into a web3 game and getting started with gameplay.

Here’s how they did it with Turnkey:

The problem: Fragmented accounts and lack of interoperability

Web3 gaming has long struggled with fragmented account systems and lack of interoperability. Faraway wanted a way for users to easily view their assets and manage their accounts for a smooth gaming experience. Already, they were competing with web2 games that had smooth login flows and easy account management — just without the interoperable in-game assets and unique gaming experiences that Faraway’s web3 games could provide. So, they turned to Turnkey.

The solution: A new login and account solution powered by Turnkey

To create a brand new login and account solution for their end users, Faraway integrated Turnkey embedded wallets into its user login system known as Faraway Connect. This connects users across all products in the ecosystem, including games, marketplaces, and user profiles.

The main purpose of this login system is not only to connect the users’ data across experiences, but also to link multiple wallets on different chains to a single profile in order to manage that user’s on-chain gaming inventory. This is a key puzzle piece in making Faraway’s games interoperable with each other, and also a key benefit of web3 games over traditional games.

Turnkey’s flexible and secure wallet infrastructure ensures that Faraway can programmatically create wallets and accounts while maintaining the flexibility needed to operate a web3 gaming system at scale. To create the user experience they were after, Faraway implemented several key features using Turnkey:

  • Segregated, non-custodial wallets: Faraway used Turnkey to create individual wallets for each player in the login process that were compatible across games

  • Seamless login with email: Users can easily sign up and log in using their email, without the need for complicated crypto wallet setups

  • Multichain support: Each wallet supports both Solana and EVM accounts, allowing users to view and manage their assets across chains

“We decided to go with Turnkey because of the team’s industry-leading experience in building custody architecture that has secured over a hundred billion dollars in crypto assets. Their ability to transform this experience into a secure and flexible non-custodial service, with scalable pricing that makes sense for nimble teams like Faraway, were key factors in our decision to choose Turnkey as our main embedded wallet provider.”
