It’s National Puppy Day for our US friends and to celebrate we’re going to take a look at the history of dog-based cryptocurrencies.
In 2025 there is a long list of dog-based coins available. Today we’re going to look at five coins; from the one that started it all to the new kids on the block(chain).
The first dog themed coin is Dogecoin (DOGE). It was started in December 2013 by two developers as a joke to poke fun at Bitcoin. Both its design and name were based on the original Shiba Inu doge meme, which led to the start of a whole new category of cryptocurrency – the Memecoin.
Despite its beginning as a tongue-in-cheek joke, DOGE has stayed strong since launch. Primarily used as a means for tipping, the coin has funded several projects and been accepted by multiple charities over the years including The Water Project and the American Cancer Society. A robust community has risen around Dogecoin, supporting each other, donating to charity and teaching newcomers to cryptocurrency. This has led to the rise of their unofficial slogan: Do Only Good Everyday.

The next dog themed coin didn’t appear until mid 2020. SHIB was created by an anonymous developer as just a fun little ETH-based memecoin. It has since built a dedicated developer community around itself.
Wholly embracing the Shiba theme, the community has gone on to build multiple projects that have combined into the massive Shiba ecosystem. A DEX (Decentralized Exchange) called Shibaswap where you can Bury (stake) your tokens, a Layer 2 Network, Shibarium and an NFT collection, Shiboshis. They’ve also created tokens for the ecosystem, called BONE (a governance token) and LEASH (a reward token).
With more projects on the way, like an upcoming Shiboshi game, SHIB remains a key part of the dog coin club.

2021 saw the launch of FLOKI, another ETH-based dog coin, named after an Elon Musk tweet about how he would name his Shiba Inu Floki. V1 of the token was originally created and launched around June 25 by an anonymous developer. However, the developer did not align with the community and overtaxed use of the coin. When the community pushed back the developer fled and abandoned the project.
Within days the community, some 34,000 people across multiple platforms, revived Floki and worked to launch V2 of the coin. On July 6 FLOKI V2 was relaunched by the community with three new core pillars of community, utility and charity.
Today FLOKI it acts as a utility token for the FLOKI ecosystem, and supports a range of products including:
Valhalla, an NFT game
University of Floki, a crypto education platform
FlokiFi Locker, for securing your crypto assets
FlokiPlaces, an NFT and merch marketplace
A Floki Debit Card

The first SOL based dog coin launched in December 2022. BONK is a utility-based token that was created as a fun, community-based coin. To ensure that the coin was distributed fairly, half of the total supply was airdropped on Christmas Day to any Solana community members that contributed to its thriving community.
The BONK ecosystem today continues to grow. By focusing on their three key pillars of Multi-Chain, DeFi and Gaming the community has created over 135 onchain integrations across 11 different chains.

The last coin we’re going to look at today is WIF, the SOL based coin that uses the dog wif hat meme as its image. This memecoin embraces the true spirit of being a memecoin and their site says it best:
What is WIF? Literally just a dog wif a hat.
