“Think outside the box!” How many times have you heard this phrase? It's the go-to mantra for creativity and innovation. But what if I tell you that there’s a treasure trove of potential inside the box that’s just waiting to be discovered? Let’s dive into why exploring inside can be just as exciting and rewarding as venturing outside.
Imagine the box as a treasure chest filled with everything you already know and have, like all your experiences, memories whether good or bad, your decisions, the choices you made in the past, the skills you learned, and of course the ones who you thought to learn and being exited about, but never made it even to the first chapter/step of it. It's like finding a secret stash of goodies in your attic. But what if this box isn’t just a physical space but a metaphor for your mind and experiences?
Our minds are like vast libraries, filled with knowledge, memories, and skills accumulated over the years. However, we often skim the surface, forgetting to explore the depths of what we already know. Taking the time to reflect on our experiences can uncover insights and strengths that we’ve overlooked. By revisiting these experiences you can draw valuable insights/solutions that apply to your current situation.
Reflect on a time when you had to work within strict limits. Perhaps it was a tight deadline, a limited budget, or any constraints on that time.
How did you manage to succeed despite these challenges?
What strategies did you use?
How did you handle stress?
What was going on in your mind when you were in that situation?
These insights can guide you in tackling new and current challenges with confidence and without coming up with a new strategy that might or might not even work, or should I say these insights can guide you in nailing those challenges super hard without thinking outside the box. These experiences show that constraints can push us to think more resourcefully and find innovative solutions.
Our past is filled with lessons and wisdom waiting to be rediscovered. Rediscovering these forgotten gems isn’t just about nostalgia (trendy vibe these days). it’s about tapping into the reservoir of wisdom and creativity that resides within you. By revisiting lessons from childhood, wisdom from mentors, cultural traditions, old hobbies, and historical perspectives, you can find renewed inspiration and guidance. These gems are part of your unique story and they hold the key to unlocking new potential in your life. So, take some time to explore your treasure chest, you might be surprised at what you find.
Why think inside? When there’s a lot Outside.
Yes, I wrote that above heading consciously, In the mathematics world there’s a way to prove the truth by contradicting the truth this is called “Proof By Contradiction”. Let's do that for our case.
Proof by Contradiction: Why Thinking Inside the Box is Often Better, For that I will not use maths for sure although that would be cool. But do it with our past experiences and historical examples. for now, assume thinking outside the box is better than thinking inside the box.
Historical Technological Advancements
Consider the development of modern computers. Early computers were large, slow, and expensive. The significant advancements that led to today’s compact and powerful devices came from incremental improvements and refinements (inside the box) rather than completely disregarding previous designs.
Contradiction: If thinking outside the box were always better, these incremental improvements (inside the box) would be less valuable. However, the evolution of computers shows that building on existing technology is crucial.
Business Innovations
Starbucks didn't invent coffee, but they revolutionized the coffee shop experience by focusing on incremental improvements and optimizing existing practices.
Contradiction: If thinking outside the box is always better, Starbucks should have disregarded traditional coffee brewing methods and invented an entirely new way to make coffee.
Scientific Discoveries
Many scientific discoveries build on existing theories and knowledge. For instance, the development of the theory of relativity by Einstein was built on Newtonian physics. Einstein did not discard Newton’s work but extended it. This inside-the-box thinking was essential for the new, groundbreaking theory.
Contradiction: If outside-the-box thinking were always better, foundational knowledge like Newtonian physics would not be necessary. However, Einstein’s work demonstrates the importance of building on existing knowledge.
The assumption that thinking outside the box is always better leads to contradictions when applied to real-world examples. Therefore, our initial assumption is false. This proves that thinking inside the box can often be more effective than thinking outside the box, especially when it comes to leveraging existing knowledge, working within constraints, and achieving sustainable and practical innovations.
look I have no hard feelings for “Thinking outside the box”, I just want you guys to know It’s equally better to think inside the box and sometimes better. All it takes is a shift in perspective to see something in a new light. This was my initial feeling for creating this generative artwork called “Think Inside The Box”
I can go more and more on how thinking inside the box can be as better as the traditional saying “Think outside the box”. And if you have read this article so far, I’m pretty much sure I have shifted your perspective. Thats it for now until then always remember to Think Inside The Box.
