Zero-Cost Airdrop: Gradient
November 25th, 2024

Gradient is a project where you can earn airdrops simply by sharing resources. Similar to Grass, all you need to do is complete the installation. If you're unfamiliar with Grass, take a look at this beginner's guide. Grass has already distributed its first round of airdrops and is now entering the second.

The ultimate goal of Gradient Network is to build a decentralized edge computing platform. Sounds complex? It’s not as complicated as it seems. Simply put, edge computing brings data and processing closer to users and devices, rather than sending everything off to faraway cloud servers for processing.

1. Why is Edge Computing Valuable?

Edge computing is a concept that complements cloud computing but serves different use cases.

Cloud computing is centralized, meaning all data is stored on large cloud servers owned by companies like AWS or Alibaba Cloud. Edge computing, on the other hand, is decentralized, allowing data to be processed closer to the source — such as on your home computer, nearby base stations, or nodes on the Gradient Network. These two approaches aren’t rivals but collaborators: clouds handle large-scale storage and complex tasks, while edges provide quick responses and real-time processing.

Gradient aims to turn everyone's devices into "edge nodes." This approach not only speeds up processing but also reduces data transmission costs. In the future, Gradient’s network could become a cornerstone for applications like real-time AI inference, autonomous driving, and smart home systems.

2. What Does Gradient Contribute to Edge Computing?

In a nutshell, Gradient helps you monetize your computer's unused computing power.

For example, during the day, you use your computer for work or entertainment. But at night, it’s mostly idle. Gradient can utilize this "wasted" computing power to generate income for you.

Gradient Network functions as a highly efficient resource-sharing platform, built on the Solana blockchain. Its mission is to ensure that underutilized computing resources are put to good use.

3. What Progress Has Gradient Made?

Gradient Network has recently achieved milestones in both technology and community development. Their current focus is the release of Sentry Node, a lightweight browser plugin. This tool helps Gradient build a global network map to analyze various connection scenarios. It’s like laying down the backbone for a distributed computing network.

Gradient is gradually expanding its Sentry Node user base. If you join now, congratulations! You’ll be part of its growth from the ground floor. Currently, during Season 0, you can earn rewards through POA (Proof-of-Availability) and POC (Proof-of-Connectivity):

  • POA Rewards: Based on the uptime of your Sentry Node.

  • POC Rewards: Earned when the network verifies its connectivity.

No need to worry about calculations — everything is automated in the background. All you need to do is install the Sentry Node.

4. How to Get Involved with Gradient?

The only requirement to join Gradient is having the Chrome browser installed on your computer. If you don’t have it yet, you can install it here.

Open Chrome and click the link to go to the signup page.

Enter your email address and click the Confirm button.

Use my referral code SLRJ23 to get 3,000 EXP and a 2% points boost. A 2% boost means your future points will be multiplied by 1.02.

Set a password, agree to the terms, and click Sign Up.

Verify your email by entering the code sent to you.

Once registered, click Open Dashboard to access your account.

Next, complete the following steps:

  • Step 2: Link your X (formerly Twitter) account and follow Gradient to earn 1,000 EXP.

  • Step 3: Install the Sentry Node plugin in Chrome by clicking Add to Chrome.

After installation, pin the Gradient Sentry Node to your bookmarks bar for easy access.

The plugin interface might show "Unsupported" if your location can’t be detected (e.g., you’re using a VPN). Turn off the VPN, and it should work fine.

A Few Notes:

Gradient is still in its early stages, so the system may be unstable. For example, my rewards after 24 hours were just 0.25 points.

However, since it only takes a simple installation and no significant effort or investment, it’s worth letting it run in the background. That said, there’s no need to leave your computer on 24/7 just for this.

Conclusion

Gradient is a project that brings technology closer to everyday life. It not only unlocks the value of idle resources but also provides an easy entry point for participants to engage with blockchain and a decentralized future. While the rewards might not be stable yet and the network is still nascent, that’s part of its charm — the potential of tomorrow lies in today’s exploration.

It’s like planting a small seed. You may not know whether it will grow into a towering tree or a lush orchard, but every sprouting leaf holds the promise of something extraordinary.
