ByteDance takes initial steps to enter China's cloud computing sector
February 10th, 2022

Tech Planet (ID: tech618) exclusively learned that ByteDance launched an enterprise cloud service platform called Huoshan Yinqing, which translates to "volcano engine" in English since February. According to report, it registered a WeChat official account called Zijie Yun in November 2019 and operated by Feishu, whose website is www.byteoc.com.

According to the "Volcano Engine" terms of service, its developer is Beijing Feishu Technology Co., Ltd. Qichacha shows that ByteDance set up a company called Beijing Huoshan Yinqing Technology Company Limited on May 11, which will operate the platform. And Huoshan Yinqing will also become an important link in ByteDance's cloud services.

It is worth noting that Feishu owned by ByteDance launched a small-scale cloud service product called LarkCloud as early as last year. According to its official introduction, LarkCloud is a cloud service product for the future. Developers do not need to consider the establishment of infrastructure such as servers and databases, and do not have to worry about a series of cumbersome things such as test environment configuration, data backup, online operation and maintenance. They just focus on product development itself.

Coincidentally, Tech Planet (ID: tech618) has also exclusively discovered that another product of ByteDance - TuChong has also launched the enterprise cloud service. It is a new digital management model to improve assistance and management efficiency. And it can reduce enterprise costs and integrate its functions, such as image storage, classification, member management, permission control, data statistics and others, which can create an efficient and convenient enterprise private cloud library for the team.

This time, the official launch of the volcano engine, ByteDance's cloud service is also on the stage. In the cloud market with many Internet giants, can ByteDance's volcano engine gain a place?

Tech Planet (ID: tech618) discovered after the experience that at first, the volcano engine was originally called Zijie Yun, and the official internal test was in the second half of 2019. In February of this year, a small-scale public beta of cloud services was launched, and it was officially renamed as "Volcano Engine".

The home page of the "Volcano Engine" is the console, and there are 9 products, including ByteVoD, live streaming, ImageX picture service, … And some functions require personal real-name authentication or enterprise authentication before they can be used.

According to the official introduction, ByteVoD is an end-to-end solution that integrates audio and video uploading, media asset management, media processing, distribution and playback. Meanwhile, it provides detailed service quality monitoring and reporting services, which aims to provide ultimate video capabilities for enterprises. And its application scenarios include short video, long video, and live streaming.

Video live streaming is based on large-scale content distribution, transcoding and messaging technologies, providing the live streaming industry with a full set of solutions such as live broadcasting and interaction, so that customers can quickly have live streaming capabilities.

Enterprise (ByteDance) live streaming is committed to building the industry's leading enterprise-level live broadcast service platform, focusing on commercial live broadcast and corporate education live broadcast categories. It relies on ByteDance enterprise services to create a live broadcast + marketing multi-end distribution service system, providing customers with high quality live broadcast service.

ImageX mainly provides small and medium-sized enterprises with one-stop convenient services for image uploading, storage, processing and distribution, and provides detailed service quality monitoring and reporting services. The application scenarios are picture bed scenes, video cover scenes, graphic and waterfall flow pictures, and copyright picture scenes.

Datawind is a lightweight big data intelligent analysis and presentation platform. Based on ByteDance's powerful big data computing performance, it provides flexible data query, advanced intelligent analysis, efficient report making and multiple data services and an agile BI tool platform that can provide cloud services.

With the advent of the digital economy, the opening of the 5G era and the wave of digital transformation, China's cloud service market will usher in a period of demand explosion.

According to the "White Paper on Cloud Computing Development (2018)" released by the China Information and Communication Research Institute, China's public cloud market has maintained a growth rate of more than 50% in the past few years and will continue to grow rapidly in the next three years.

According to another "Tracking of China's Public Cloud Service Market (2019 Q3)" released by IDC, the scale of the Chinese public cloud IaaS market in Q3 2019 reached 14.46 billion yuan, an increase of 62.2% year-on-year. Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud, and Kingsoft Cloud, as the top three Internet cloud service providers, jointly lead the rapid development of China's cloud computing market with China Telecom Tianyi, Huawei Cloud, and AWS Cloud.

According to IDC's last half-year report, the average annual compound growth rate of China's public cloud IaaS will reach 46% in 2019-2023. It is expected that the Chinese IaaS market will reach 208.7 billion yuan by 2023.

For ByteDance, entering the huge cloud service market will be a rare opportunity, and it will also face great challenges.

On the one hand, there are many strong competitors including Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud, and Kingsoft Cloud, as well as JD Cloud, Baidu Cloud, Meituan Cloud, and Didi Cloud in the market segment; on the other hand, ByteDance's "volcano engine" is very similar to most cloud service products. Therefore, under the premise of homogeneity, customers will choose more mature cloud service providers, which is also a great challenge for ByteDance.

Can volcano engine get a vital seat for ByteDance in the future cloud service market, which is worth looking forward to.
