A Future Scout is…🐱🚀
We get asked regularly what our definition of a Future Scout is. We don’t believe its any one thing — its what all of us can envision it to be together. Over the years we’ve collected some descriptions of what a Future Scout is to our participants and our mentors for the program. Here are a few that we’ve compiled into a poem for all of you.
Self-directed, lifelong learning, Part I — A paradigm shift
When we go to school we’re introduced to a set curriculum and a class schedule outlining what our course load will look like for the next 9 months. We’re put on a schedule of what we’ll read, what we’ll see and experience. The underlying idea is that someone else knows what we need to know, and they come just in time to teach us. Furthermore, there’s a defined timeframe with the destination of an “education” firmly in sight. It’s built around an idea that we’ll all be the same and we’ll all end up in the same place. And this space is known as the bell curve.
Scouting the Future — The Handbook of 21st Century Survival Skills
It’s 2021, and there’s no doubt that we’re living through the midst of major systems upheaval. We’re simultaneously facing ecological systems collapse, an ongoing global pandemic, a weaponized media and government kleptocracies, just to name an obvious few. At the same time, we’ve never been so globally connected, nor experienced such rapid changes in all parts of our life. Humanity is experiencing a vast shift that challenges our fundamental ideas about work, life and play. New technologies, tools and platforms are transforming both the analog and digital worlds, impacting all of our futures…all vocations and occupations…all ecosystems and economies.
