When night came
December 13th, 2022

Is there still a little shining firefly in our hearts that can transmit the most subtle thoughts? Firefly sat by a lake in the col for dinner. When night came, a cool evening breeze blew over the lake. Only in early summer season, the southern islands Ru wet hot in the day. Rare this lakeside breeze, the clutter and worry blow clean. Like a mirror of the lake, a piece of empty, reflecting the outline of the surrounding hills. The early moon rises, the water mountains are full of the moon. The residents of the city were in great panic because of the epidemic. Epidemics are sudden and spread quickly. The virus is nowhere to be found, drugs to fight it are still being developed, and the number of deaths is increasing day by day. Everyone is scared to be infected, suspected people around the virus, do not know whether they will be the next person affected by the virus. Zhuzi, I think of the Buddhist sutra often said "ignorance", I do not know whether it is a kind of indescribable fear. Fear often doesn't need a reason. In fact, people are destined to die from birth. Man is born in a phenomenon that includes death. Are we afraid of death? Fear of death is also a kind of "ignorance". We fear only because we know so little.

If I sat by the lake a little longer, because of the moonlight and the mountain wind, because of the firefly flying in the grass, I could have a little more clarity of mind. However, I also worry about the disease and panic below the mountain, I also worry about life and death, I am still in the "ignorance" ah! Fluorescent fires, far and near, high and low, scattered, flickered in the dark valley. The firefly flickered at a frequency much like the signal light on a mobile phone, with a greenish tint, flickering in the silent darkness. A pause of a few seconds, as if searching, as if waiting, as if the transmission of a faint heart in the vast universe. Is there hope to seek and wait in the midst of ignorance and fear? In the great black web of impenetrable death, is there still a little glinting firefly in our hearts that can transmit the faintest thoughts? Through the darkest moments of fear? Fireflies are insects of the order Coleoptera, the same species as scarab beetles. Fireflies shine because males and females seek mates with similar frequencies. I laughed, feeling that J's explanation had a kind of youthful wit. It was not like science, not like explaining insect ecology, but like making fun of human behavior. Perhaps, humans are not far from insects. Our love and hate, our desires, our will to live, our fear of death, are still governed by the instinctive rules of the biological world. Do we still yearn for a little more "human" meaning and value? Zhu Zi, J is a young student of art. He drew the male and female images of fireflies in the picture above. The female's body has sections of limbs, which look like the intricate skirts of ancient court women. If art is literally translated as "beautiful technology", what is this technology to be used for? I wanted to ask J, but he was concentrating on observing fireflies, sketching and recording. When he saw many children carrying flashlights up the mountain, he earnestly reminded them one by one, "Would you please turn off the flashlights? It interferes with firefly reproduction." The children obeyed, turned off their flashlights, and the fireflies sparkled like stars. In the dark to hear the child "wow" a sound, full of joy and admiration. I didn't ask any further questions. Walking down the hill in the dark, the fireflies accompany you all the way, echoing the lights of the houses farther down the hill. The stars in the sky, or the lights in the world, were once the memory of human hope in the long dark, even if faint as firefly, it seems to free us from the fear of "ignorance" for the time being.
