NFTs: A Gamer’s Journey - Part 5

Hi NFT-game designers, I’m a gamer. NFTs are not my thing. But hey, they’re getting more popular. So I decided to give it a shot and try myself at NFT gaming. But my little experiment raised many questions.

So I decided to write about my journey, hoping you could find in it useful info to help you onboard other traditional gamers like me.

I broke down my NFT gaming journey into 5 challenges. May they inspire you.

Challenge #5: “Wait but… It’s not even a good game?”

Let’s be honest: during the last bull run, there were many bad “games”. Players invested in the hope of fame or at least momentum, but most turned out to be Ponzi, get-rich-quick schemes and rug pulls…or just badly built.

And many others copied them. So we just ended up with a lot of bad games, all built with a narrow “get-rich quick” mentality.

Us gamers were not impressed. And this bad impression of NFT gaming remains strong.

Promises, promises…
Promises, promises…

If that’s your idea of a game, go for it.

But be honest — as a game developer, are you creating a game that is enabling NFTs and self-ownership? Or are you simply another glorified NFT rug pull, with gamified mechanics?

And…is it an NFT & crypto game because it needs NFTs & crypto… or because Web3 is cool?

So..

Many games are working hard to deliver quality products to the gamers community — with new experiences, new mechanics and leveraging Web3 to create the best experiences for gamers.

Big Time, Illuvium, Treeverse, Star Atlas, Ember Sword… These games try empower gamer communities and deliver top products.

And here, I don’t just mean with high-level graphics… Look at Worldwide Webb! It’s a fun and dynamic metaverse giving utility to many popular NFT projects while empowering people to develop communities, enjoy fun quests and tell their own stories…all in a retro 2D pixel art style!

It, and other community-focused virtual worlds like The Sandbox, NFT Worlds and Arcade Land offer digital land and tools to promote games development, and encourage people to play games together.

We’re just at the beginning.

Projects are building, and with NFTs we have the opportunity to join them, to influence them, to own a part of them.

Maybe that’s what kept me going on my NFT gaming journey…

The idea of owning my own adventure.

Web3 has a lot of value to offer the individual gamer.

As an NFT game creator, you have the chance not just to influence a gamer’s in-game journey, but his/her IRL journey too — in learning about Web3, NFTs and the blockchain, and reflecting on ownership and asset management.

As a passionate gamer, I hope you’ll seize this opportunity.

And if you do…

I can’t wait to experience your game.
