Ready Layer Two

Quix

In December of 2021, our team at Quix launched the first NFT marketplace on the Optimism Layer 2 network. As both NFT creators and collectors on Ethereum mainnet ourselves, we were well acquainted with ETH’s pain points, and we were excited by the possibilities that Optimism presented. It had cheap gas fees, an untouched NFT ecosystem, and a team with the mission of scaling Ethereum’s values and rewarding projects for the impact they bring to the network. It checked every box for us, but for something that seemed to be such an obvious solution to so many of the issues on Layer 1, and that even had Vitalik’s stamp of approval, Optimism still felt like a secret gem of web3. So, we worked to deploy Quix as fast as we could, but when we came up for air and looked around, it turned out we may have been even earlier than we thought.

I’m just going to say it: there’s been a ton of money thrown into blockchain, but the results have been pathetic in comparison.

Why rollups can offer higher throughput than L1 execution

Oisín Kyne has a pretty great thread about why app-specific rollups are better than app-specific L1s for most usecases. I haven’t written about rollups for months now (outside of fractal scaling) and I haven’t kept up to date with the developments in the space. Also, as always (I know you’re tired of hearing this, but I’ll keep saying it) I have zero experience in software development and I’m just an amateur blogger and shitposter, so everything I say here may be bollocks.

Fractal Scaling

This topic has been well covered by StarkWare and recently Vitalik has a detailed post about layer 3s. So, do I have anything to add? I always thought I did not, which is why I never wrote on the topic - and it’s been a good ~10 months since I first discussed this topic with the StarkWare folks. But today, I think I might be able ramble about it from a different perspective.
