Hekonai #9

Monsters made of stolen, mismatched data surrounded me on all sides. Their distorted hands reached out for me, hungry to strip my data clean.

I was scared but drew my sword, stumbling as I tried to strike a samurai pose. They laughed in garbled voices. My eyes narrowed. I didn't come this far to be the punchline to a sick joke. Embarrassment gave way to righteous anger.

My blade burst into flames as I swung it in a 360 degree circle so graceful it stunned everyone, me most of all. I grinned with surprise as my attackers were de-rezzed by the slash! A pile of charred 1's and 0's was all that was left where each one stood.

I was feeling good about my newfound swordplay skills until I heard more monster noises. I looked around and saw dozens of patchwork digital beasts emerging from the shadows, all shuffling in my direction.

I braced for another fight. One I'd probably loose.

Then I heard a voice above me: It said "It was brave of you to come here without copyright protection." I lifted my sword in anticipation of an attack, only to be swallowed up in a flash of light!

Post Soundtrack: Mystery's Apotheosis - Fabio Frizzi

Into the author’s mind: I love horror movies, particularly from the '70s and '80s. My fondness for the films of Italian director Lucio Fulci got me into the work of Fabio Frizzi, a composer who wrote music for some of his best-known horror films. "Mystery's Apotheosis" comes from the finale of City Of The Living Dead and it offers an exciting mixture of prog rock and electronic music. It was used to underscore a scene of heroes making a valiant last stand against a mob of undead attackers: thus, it's perfect to use for a story where Hekonai is fighting the high-tech version of such a battle.
