We need different voices , styles and approaches to help grow this thing. We need more artists to cross the tipping point of visibility and we need those artists to attract different types of people, with different interests and identities. We have a healthy and exciting scene that is growing but over the last year we have seen less and less artists develop to the higher levels of exposure, and the leaders of this movement have not been joined by new ones who could be attracting new audiences.
This young space may not have the capacity to be creating and developing new leaders … yet this is one of the complaints we hear most about the ‘old’ industry; that there is a lack of development and it only follows numbers. Yet here we are unable as a scene to work out how to amplify, develop and assist the next wave of artists with the potential to take this technology to new audiences and show how beneficial and creative it can allow us to be.
So over the last months I’ve slowed down, because when I started my exploration of the block-chain I decided that I wanted to have intention, story and reason for how I release my music .. not that this should be the route for everyone, just that this what I decided was what was going to make me me. I’ve be been waiting and searching for ideas I feel excited by that can help people connect with my music and me on a deeper level, and importantly re-think their experience of supporting artists and offer something different to what we know. The challenge has been of course money … to build new ideas and concepts we need it, other wise we only have the tools that are already being used, and our creativity is limited to what we as artists can attach to the ownership and the distribution itself... and again this becomes limited by the tools built by others. This creates an echo chamber as the people attracted to these approaches are the only newcomers to the space, and they come with a singular reason and narrative for what is ‘good’ and why they are here.
There has been and continues to be some amazing success stories each in their own lane, and own way of approaching and building around blockchain technology… the issue is that the expectation is these are the only routes as we focus on an single ‘answer’ or ‘proven’ route to success .. I want to challenge this as this was my problem with web2; that we are served this one route and limited to that route to success.
I hope and I want to show that the blockchain allows us to continuously re-develop new ways of growing as artists and standing out provided by the flexibility of the tech we have at our disposal. Creative careers are in a constant state of uncertainty as technology continues to impact our lives, and we are all searching for value both as creators and consumers. So, we need people to be able to experiment, to take risks and find answers when we don’t even know the right questions to ask.
We need to build our own worlds, our own way and find our own people.
