My experience at DevRel Uni Cohort 6
December 24th, 2024

After years in the ecosystem and trying to use most developer tools I didn't know who to blame when I didn't even know where to start or who to thank when in a few minutes I had everything working. Who is in charge of promoting the tool? Who has created this documentation? Who is this person who makes videos explaining how to implement the technology?

Before summer, thanks to Saul, a good friend who did Cohort 5, I found the answer to those questions, Developer Relations, the team in charge of making developers able to implement a technology to create unique applications.

It wasn't until my first hackathon where I discovered the importance of a DevRel, I was trying to implement the Agglayer Bridge without documentation or anyone who could give me instant support, then I realized how essential their work is and how taken for granted we always take it, I decided that no other developer would have to go through that suffering if it depended on me.

I applied to DevRel Uni to learn all the basics of the role I want to dedicate myself to, I am a technical person so I wouldn't know how to guide my blogs with storytelling or how to “sell” our product to a developer, nor how to measure realistic metrics.

When I went into the first class with Bianca and discovered the whole broad spectrum of DevRel I was a bit overwhelmed, what doesn't a DevRel do? was the question that echoed in my head when the class finished, but I managed to solve my first question about measuring metrics.

The first homework was to make a 30-60-90 plan imagining that we were joining Arbitrum, I oriented it to Stylus since I think it is their star product for the next years, besides it is going to need a lot of promotion so people can squeeze all it has to offer. I was already imagining myself putting this plan into practice after the great response it got with likes from even the co-founder and the response from Arbitrum's main account ;)

It wasn't until Arbitrum's introductory talk with Matt Hamilton where I discovered that many of the things I had in my plan had already been done or were on the way, I was well on my way on my journey to becoming DevRel.

In the second class with Kevin Blanco I found one of my weak points, the art of Storytelling, I am not a person who liked to read books or look at how stories are told, but thanks to his key points I knew how to tell my experience of my first hackathon, in the end I liked the work and the result.

In the third class with Coogan Brennan we learned how to target developer education in the right way and we had to imagine joining Arbitrum and making 5 proposals, I think any team could adapt them to their product.

In the fourth class with Austin Griffith we learned how to create examples and implementations in the blink of an eye, for homework we had to create a technical tutorial by groups, in the end only Roberto and I participated with a tutorial on how to deploy your first Stylus contract and interact with it using ETH-Scaffold.

In the fifth class with Olayinka Oshidipe we learned how to create videos and all the key steps to create a good one, now I was facing my biggest challenge, to create my first video, what was I going to do? am I going to be able to learn how to edit? my native language is not English and I have to explain content in it? In the end I ended up creating an introduction to Stylus inspired by the style of Fireship, and to be honest with a good final result and looking forward to continue with that format.

We have already reached the last class with Francesco Andreoli where we get deeper into the DevRel ecosystem and where the last exercise is what you have been reading all this time :), tell our experience during the course and what we have been learning.

In conclusion, I think it is a very good and essential course for people who want to orient their professional career towards these positions or who want to learn the essential tasks to facilitate the work of their team, we have learned too many tools to list them in this article. It is an absolute recommendation for anyone who is thinking about taking it. You can now pre register for the next cohort.

Before I finish, do you know what all the DevRels agreed on? In hackathons you don't get real users, funny enough that's what made me start this path ;)
