Hekonai #11

I had gotten further than I imagined was possible. I was also more confused than I've ever been.

My ejection from CyberBanker's ship returned me to the void. On one side, I saw a sword-carved passage back to my animated past. On the other side, a small galaxy of portals showing the unhappy creators from the world that spawned me.

I considered retreating into the past. Maybe I'd become a king there... but that would just be a new loop of endless repetition.

I looked longingly in the direction of the portals. I might find a future there, I thought, but how? I wanted to help the creators but had no idea how to follow CyberBanker's advice.

I knew things happened when I swung my sword so I tried that: the blade didn't light up and no passageways were opened. Despair began to creep into my mind.

My next thought was blunt: get it together. Self-pity wasn't going to solve my problem. I was free and I could fight. With or without guidance, I had to move forward.

I drew my sword once more and aimed it at the portals. Its blade caught fire as it guided me to them.

Post Soundtrack: Moss Garden

Into the author’s mind: This is the rare journal entry where I immediately knew what piece of music I needed. "Moss Garden" comes from the second side of David Bowie's classic Heroes album and it's a gorgeous, drifting ambient piece that fuses the organic and the electronic. The pillowy synths and occasional washes of techno-distortion give it a futuristic vibe but prominent use of a koto lends a human touch and adds an Eastern element that ideally suits Hekonai.  It's perfect music for pondering one's future while drifting through an electronic purgatory and I knew it had to be the music for this entry.
