I write about aspects of Web3. I try to make concepts like the metaverse and blockchain more understandable to those who don't get it.

Participate to Earn: Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...

December 15th, 2022
If you’re like me, you remember when Facebook went from something dismissible to something enormous, especially regarding its value. I remember initially wondering: ‘how are they worth SO much?’ After all, using Facebook has always been free, so it doesn’t matter how many billions of people have accounts and use the site: free multiplied by any number is still no profit. What’s the secret? As we now know, it’s ads, of course. Despite its current market turbulence, the company has a market cap greater than $300 billion. Its business model is certainly effective.

Marketing in the metaverse: unlocking the power of 3D

November 7th, 2022
In my last article, we looked at the game-changing potential of the metaverse. Specifically, how 3D graphics will shift the internet from 2D static experiences to immersive 3D synchronous experiences, we can enjoy together. With that reframe in mind, what are the implications for marketing in the metaverse, and what can brands do to take advantage of the possibilities? This question requires speculation and imagination to approach. To set down our preconceived notions of marketing, social media, and the internet itself, and challenge our mental models to look beyond what we're used to and consider what could be.

Reframing the metaverse: what the word actually means for web3

November 4th, 2022
In 2016, Nick Haslam, a professor of psychology at the University of Melbourne, wrote a research paper exploring the idea of "Concept Creep." The Atlantic offers a great analysis of this concept here. Essentially, Concept Creep is when a term that pertains to a particular idea begins to encompass something tangentially, loosely, or even possibly unrelated.

Exploring the utility of the metaverse

September 9th, 2022
Of the various up-and-coming technological developments in the zeitgeist, few are as hyped - and simultaneously unclear - as the metaverse. Its promise is grandiose: nothing short of the next revolution in digital technology. But what does that mean? What does the metaverse do? Who is it for? There is no singular, unified belief of what it will eventually solidify into. (And despite what Mark Zuckerberg might say, there are and will be more metaverses than his behemoth.) Tech insiders claim that the platform will impact almost every aspect of our lives. Given the scope of the implied impact, there are endless regions to study and contemplate. This examination will focus on the enterprise lens.

The metaverse has a content problem...

August 5th, 2022
UGC is the lifeblood of social media platforms and has changed how we consume, create content, and interact with the internet as a whole. But what will it look like as we move into web 3.0 and an internet era defined by the metaverse?

The intersection of the metaverse and blockchain. Why these are more than buzzwords.

July 11th, 2022
Over the past few years, the words ‘blockchain,’ ‘cryptocurrency,’ ‘NFTs,’ and ‘metaverse’ have become as present as spring pollen, and for many people, as mysterious and irritating. Tech evangelists promise boundless wealth and opportunity in these spaces… platforms… or assets (what are these things?). Yet, like flying cars and virtual reality, exciting promises seem easy to make and hard to deliver. So, what is the promise of these industries, are they viable, and if so, what should you do about it?
